Mit der Ausstellung NIPPON MANIA richtet das Kunsthaus den Blick auf die aktuelle Kunst Japans, der aus eurozentrischer Sicht noch immer von Klischees verstellt ist. Denn nach wie vor haben wir als Europäer eminente Schwierigkeiten, die japanische Mentalität zu ergründen, ihre Verhaltenscodes und subtil ausgebildete Zeichensprache nicht misszuverstehen. – Den meisten, in der hiesigen Hemisphäre aufgewachsenen Menschen wird japanisches Denken und Empfinden zeitlebens ein Mysterium bleiben. Und wenn alle Begriffe zur Beschreibung der undurchsichtig bleibenden Kultur Japans versagen, kommen beim westlichen Beobachter verschwommene Vorstellungen östlicher „Spiritualität“ ins Spiel, die bequemerweise all das subsumieren, was in irgendeiner Form fernost-exotisch und metaphysisch anmutet. Egal, ob es sich dabei um die feinsinnige Ästhetik der Teezeremonie oder die nicht minder befremdliche japanische Kunst der Gegenwart handelt.
Die Ausstellung versucht zu ergründen, welche der Charakterisierungen japanischer Kunst tatsächlich greifen, die als perfektionistisch glatt bis designerisch gelackt, essenzhaft in ihrem Minimalismus, puristisch, hyperästhetisch und jeden sozialen Anspruchs enthoben beschrieben wird. Die Brüche und Reibungspunkte, an denen derlei Trivialisierungen scheitern aufzuzeigen, ist Ziel der Überblicksschau im Kunsthaus Kaufbeuren. Denn in Japan, historisch erprobt im Absorbieren von Fremdeinflüssen, verbindet sich ein bis heute lebendiges Kulturerbe mit der Innovationsmanie einer hochtechnisierten Gesellschaft. Diese eigentümliche Symbiose in der japanischen Kunst und Kultur berührt letztendlich die hochaktuelle Frage der Identitätsbewahrung in einer Welt, die mehr und mehr von virtuellen Realitäten bestimmt wird.
